Vehicle Service Trades

Course Course Description
Virginia Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector Written Test Preparation (16 Hours)
  • Prepare to take the written and practical examinations for Class “A” Unlimited Safety Inspector, Class B ” Trailer, and Class “C ” Motorcycle Licenses.
  • Instructor lead review of Official Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Manual.
Virginia Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector Practicum Test Preparation (4 Hours)
  • Perform practice inspections on a variety of vehicles with safety issues.
Vehicle Electrical Systems I: Fundamentals (8 Hours)
  • Fundamentals of electrical system design and applications, Ohm’s Law calculations, circuit design and components.
  • Theory of operation and testing of battery, starting and charging system.
Vehicle Electrical Systems II: Troubleshooting and Repair (8 Hours)
  • Electrical component operation and diagnosis. Electrical wiring schematic reading and circuit diagnosis.
  • Voltage drop testing, multi-meter and oscilloscope usage, sensor testing, and repair procedures.
  • Identification and testing of input and output circuits.
Vehicle Electrical Systems III: Advanced Diagnostics (8 Hours)
  • Advanced diagnostic techniques in modern vehicle computer controlled electrical systems.
  • Logic theory, advanced wiring schematic reading, electrical testing, and scanner usage.
  • Body support system testing and oscilloscope usage. Testing high voltage hybrid electrical systems.
Principles of Steering and Alignment (8 Hours)
  • The Course will focus on understanding alignment angles and tire wear patterns associated with incorrect alignment, as well as component identification and function on modern automotive and light truck applications.
  • Students will learn the necessary steps to safely and efficiently conduct a proper four-wheel alignment using Hunter Hawkeye equipment and software on front and rear wheel drive vehicles.
ABS Brake Systems Diagnostic and Repair (8 Hours)
  • Students will learn maintenance, troubleshooting and repair modern brake and traction control systems.
  • Theory, component identification, and application of ABS Systems.
  • Understand circuits and operation.
Vehicle Climate Control Systems Diagnostic and Repair (8 Hours)
  • Overview of climate control systems, including vehicle cooling systems.
  • Component identification, diagnosing faults, and repair of AC systems.
  • System charging, pressure, and recovery will be covered.
  • EPA 609 test included in training.

Heavy Vehicle and Fleet Trades

Principles of Fluid Power (8 Hours)
  • Course designed for entry to mid-level technicians in the construction equipment, heavy vehicle, and industrial service fields.
  • Topics covered include theory and calculations of fluid power, understanding pressure and flow, and system component identification.
  • Preventive maintenance and diagnostics are introduced.
Hydraulic Systems Troubleshooting and Repair (8 Hours)
  • Course designed for heavy vehicle shop or field technicians.
  • Content expands on Principles of Fluid Power and covers advanced systems components, cylinders, pumps, and control valves.
  • Understanding circuit diagrams and intermediate-level diagnostics and repair.
Basic Welding for Service Technicians (15 hours)
  • Improve the skills of automotive, truck, or equipment technicians working for fleet repair facilities, dealerships, or independent shops.
  • Learn the setup and operation of wire feed welding machines, techniques, and precautions.
  • Weld coupons of various materials.
AWS Weld Testing and Certification (8 Hours)
  • Designed for welders seeking certification in various welding processes.
  • Course prepares students for specific AWS standards for weld process and material position certification test.
  • Participants will be instructed in the safe operation of the welding equipment particular to your test. Materials and certification are included in the course fee.
Diesel Emission Controls (20 Hours)
  • Learn the operation and diagnostics of diesel emission control systems 2004 and newer.
  • Covers EPA regulations, understanding diesel pollutants and related chemical reactions, and system operations.
  • Diagnose and repair of Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Diesel Particulate Filter, and Selective Catalytic Reduction systems.
Principles of Effective Preventative Maintenance (8 Hours)
  • This course provides an overview of a well-implemented preventive maintenance program. Topics covered include understanding the differences between A, B, C, D, and L inspections, and steps required to perform an effective inspection.
  • Students will learn Federal inspection regulations, DOT Inspections, Out-of-Service criteria, and DOT Record-keeping requirements.
Effective and Compliant Pre-Trip Inspections (8 Hours)
  • Students attending this course will learn the specifics of Identifying maintenance issues before they lead to costly repairs or down time, explore how proper inspections lead to increased safety, and DOT Record-keeping requirements and penalties.
  • Topic also include understanding liability concerns and vehicle Out-of-Service criteria.

Industrial and Construction Trades

EPA608 Technician Certification (8 Hours)
  • Required by Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act for anyone who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants.
  • Course covers mandatory training and required knowledge of ozone depleting refrigerants and EPA regulations.
  • EPA 608 Certification Exam included in cost of training.
